Q&A with Judy Bernstein

Co-Author of Disturbed in Their Nests: A Journey from Sudan’s Dinkaland to San Diego’s City Heights and Susan J. Farese

SJF: In a nutshell, tell us about your book or written piece.
JB: Disturbed in Their Nests recounts the first year in America of an African refugee and his mentor, a suburban mom, with their initial misunderstandings, their growing trust, and their lasting friendship.

SJF: What has your experience been as a writer in San Diego?
JB: I’ve been a writer in San Diego for twenty-five years and have been supported and felt appreciated by both other writers and readers. It’s a great community for learning and thriving as a writer, with many resources.

SJF: How has storytelling influenced your life?
JB: Storytelling has drastically improved and expanded my life. I’ve met many wonderful people I never would have encountered and it has taken me places I couldn’t have imagined.

SJF: If you had a magic wand, what kind of opportunities would be available to writers in San Diego?
JB: I’m a huge believer in writing groups. I never could have achieved what we have without them. But they are not easy to find, especially the right one. So perhaps a resource that would help writers find a group that fits their needs, place, and time schedule.

SJF: What are you excited about when it comes to participating in the inaugural San Diego Writers Festival?
JB: Writers coming together!

SJF: What advice would you give to a new writer in San Diego?
JB: Join a writer’s group and be willing to take critique and give constructive critique to others.

SJF: Many thanks, Judy!
