Q & A with author Lauren Halsted and Susan J. Farese of SJF Communications

SJF: In a nutshell, – tell us about your book or written piece.
LH: My book in progress, New for Me, is a story about my Uncle Fred as well as my journey learning about him. My Uncle Fred was someone who pushed boundaries. He was an early gay porn star and producer, and two of his films are the only gay erotic art in the NYC Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. He lived an interesting life, to say the least, yet I didn’t know him while he was alive. He committed suicide when I was nine years old, but even before then, I didn’t have a relationship with him. Part of my book is about my journey discovering his life and the many things I am learning from him.

SJF: What has your experience been as a writer in San Diego?
LH: I love San Diego and find that there is a vibrant community for writers and for artists more generally. As they say, I “found my tribe” with San Diego Writers, Ink, and more specifically, the San Diego Memoir Writers Association, which organizes many wonderful events for local writers. I am also inspired by So Say We All‘s events, and have had the opportunity to participate in a VAMP show. My main job is as an English professor at Cuyamaca College, so I am blessed to be surrounded by writers.

SJF: How has storytelling influenced your life?
LH: Storytelling is a fundamental part of the human experience. It is how we make sense of the events in our lives and those we witness. For me personally, storytelling has helped me better understand myself, because it allows me to examine the narratives and analyze what is inherent in those stories and what I can change. Storytelling gives me the chance to step outside of my own shoes and understand the bigger picture of my story and those of others.

SJF: If you had a magic wand, what kind of opportunities would be available to writers in San Diego?
LH: Not sure.

SJF: What are you excited about when it comes to participating in the inaugural San Diego Writers Festival?
LH: I am excited to hear the many amazing writers working in San Diego, and share in the community created by the event.

SJF: What advice would you give to a new writer in San Diego?
LH: Keep writing. Trust yourself and find your tribe.

SJF: Many thanks, Lauren!
