Q & A with author Kristen Fogle and Susan J. Farese of SJF Communications

SJF: In a nutshell, tell us about your organization.
KF: San Diego Writers, Ink (SDWI) aims to be a literary hub in San Diego. We have classes and programs for all kinds of writers . . . whether you are brand-spanking new or have published books, articles, and the like. We have three spaces in the Arts District at Liberty Station, where we have been for almost six years.

SJF: What has your experience been as a writer in San Diego?
KF: Before I became executive director of SDWI, I was a magazine editor/writer. A lot of that was writing in studios and one-bedrooms in San Diego. In fact, I applied for a job at Writers, Ink because the writing life was just so lonely! Which is why I love this org — we are made up of many, many sub-communities, so people can find the education and camaraderie they might be seeking.

SJF: How has storytelling influenced your life?
KF: Like the writing community, the theater community in San Diego has provided me so much. I think being able to access both makes me insanely lucky.

SJF: If you had a magic wand, what kind of opportunities would be available to writers in San Diego?
KF: Visibility. I think we have a lot of talent. But the publishing world is very different from what it once was. I want everyone to be able to access the stories San Diegans tell.

SJF: What are you excited about when it comes to participating in the inaugural San Diego Writers Festival?
KF: It’s great to be able to provide programming with other arts non-profits and with authors. I think for a young person, or maybe someone going through a change in their life especially, it’s important to see that there are opportunities and support in place for writers.

SJF: What advice would you give to a new writer in San Diego?
KF: My advice for new writers is the same I would give anyone new to anything. Just do it. Throw some spaghetti on the wall, see what sticks. Want to try your hand at poetry? Go to a read-and-critique. Short story? Read at an event. Submit to a contest. Go to a writing festival! There are so many opportunities. Dabble. Get out there and see what you like. You might be surprised.

SJF: Many thanks, Kristen!
